Sono le dieci di sera. L’ultimo autobus si ferma in Bridge Street a Hollin Bridge. Una giovane donna scende. Ha una borsa grande. Il suo nome è Ana. Ha ventiquattro anni.
It is ten o’clock at night. The last bus stops on Bridge Street in Hollin Bridge. A young woman gets off. She has one big bag. Her name is Ana. She is twenty-four.
Ana guarda il telefono. Sul telefono c’è un annuncio: CERCHIAMO UNA PANETTIERA NOTTURNA. NESSUNA ESPERIENZA. STANZA AL PIANO DI SOPRA. BELL’S BAKERY, 7 BRIDGE STREET.
Ana looks at her phone. On the phone, there is an advert: WE NEED A NIGHT BAKER. NO EXPERIENCE. ROOM UPSTAIRS. BELL’S BAKERY, 7 BRIDGE STREET.
Il numero sette è un vecchio negozio di pietra. Sopra la porta c’è un nome: BELL’S BAKERY. Il negozio è buio. Ana bussa alla porta. Niente. Bussa di nuovo.
Number seven is an old stone shop. Over the door, there is a name: BELL’S BAKERY. The shop is dark. Ana knocks on the door. Nothing. She knocks again.
Poi c’è una luce al piano di sopra. La porta si apre. C’è un uomo vecchio e grande. Ha i capelli bianchi e la faccia rossa. Non è contento.
Then there is a light upstairs. The door opens. A big old man stands there. He has white hair and a red face. He isn’t happy.
«Siamo chiusi», dice.
“We’re closed,” he says.
«Salve. Buonasera», dice Ana. «Mi chiamo Ana. Sono qui per il lavoro. La panettiera notturna».
“Hello. Good evening,” Ana says. “My name is Ana. I’m here for the work. The night baker.”
L’uomo la guarda. Poi guarda la sua borsa. «Sei Ana? Ana dell’email?»
The man looks at her. Then he looks at her bag. “You’re Ana? Ana from the email?”
«Sì. Ana».
“Yes. Ana.”
«Sono Walter. Walter Bell. Sai fare il pane?»
“I’m Walter. Walter Bell. Can you bake?”
Ana non capisce. «Scusi. Può ripetere, per favore?»
Ana doesn’t understand. “Sorry. Can you say that again, please?”
«Sai fare il pane? Sai preparare il pane?» Lo dice di nuovo, molto lentamente.
“Can you bake? Can you make bread?” He says it again, very slowly.
«No», dice Ana. «Ma l’annuncio dice: nessuna esperienza».
“No,” Ana says. “But the advert says: no experience.”
Walter tace. Poi ride, una risata breve. «Sì. Dice questo. Entra. Fa freddo».
Walter is quiet. Then he laughs, a short laugh. “Yes. It says that. Come in. It’s cold.”
Dentro, la panetteria è calda. C’è un grande forno in fondo. Un vecchio cane nero dorme vicino al forno. Apre un occhio e guarda Ana.
Inside, the bakery is warm. There is a big oven at the back. An old black dog sleeps next to the oven. He opens one eye and looks at Ana.
