Haar naam is Ana. Ze is vierentwintig.
It is ten o’clock at night. The last bus stops on Bridge Street in Hollin Bridge. A young woman gets off. She has one big bag. Her name is Ana. She is twenty-four.
KAMER BOVEN. BELL’S BAKERY, 7 BRIDGE STREET.
Ana looks at her phone. On the phone, there is an advert: WE NEED A NIGHT BAKER. NO EXPERIENCE. ROOM UPSTAIRS. BELL’S BAKERY, 7 BRIDGE STREET.
Niets. Ze klopt weer.
Number seven is an old stone shop. Over the door, there is a name: BELL’S BAKERY. The shop is dark. Ana knocks on the door. Nothing. She knocks again.
Dan is er boven een licht. De deur gaat open. Een grote oude man staat daar.
Then there is a light upstairs. The door opens. A big old man stands there. He has white hair and a red face. He isn’t happy.
“Wij zijn gesloten,” zegt hij.
“We’re closed,” he says.
“Hallo. Goedenavond,” zegt Ana. “Mijn naam is Ana. Ik ben hier voor het werk. De nachtbakker.”
“Hello. Good evening,” Ana says. “My name is Ana. I’m here for the work. The night baker.”
De man kijkt naar haar. Dan kijkt hij naar haar tas. “Bent u Ana? Ana van de e-mail?”
The man looks at her. Then he looks at her bag. “You’re Ana? Ana from the email?”
“Ja. Ana.”
“Yes. Ana.”
“Ik ben Walter. Walter Bell. Kunt u bakken?”
“I’m Walter. Walter Bell. Can you bake?”
Ana begrijpt het niet. “Sorry. Kunt u dat nog een keer zeggen, alstublieft?”
Ana doesn’t understand. “Sorry. Can you say that again, please?”
“Kunt u bakken? Kunt u brood maken?” Hij zegt het weer, heel langzaam.
“Can you bake? Can you make bread?” He says it again, very slowly.
“Nee,” zegt Ana. “Maar de advertentie zegt: geen ervaring.”
“No,” Ana says. “But the advert says: no experience.”
Walter is stil. Dan lacht hij, een korte lach. “Ja. Dat staat er. Kom binnen. Het is koud.”
Walter is quiet. Then he laughs, a short laugh. “Yes. It says that. Come in. It’s cold.”
Inside, the bakery is warm. There is a big oven at the back. An old black dog sleeps next to the oven. He opens one eye and looks at Ana.
