The Lost Valley

इक्वाडोर के एंडीज़ पर्वतों के सबसे जंगली हिस्से में एक खोई हुई पहाड़ी घाटी है। लोग उसे अंधों का देश कहते हैं।

In the wildest part of the Andes of Ecuador, there is a lost mountain valley. People call it the Country of the Blind.

बहुत पहले आदमी वहाँ पहुँच सकते थे, लेकिन खड्डों से होकर जाने वाला रास्ता भयानक था। पेरू के कुछ परिवार एक क्रूर शासक से बचने के लिए उसी रास्ते से गए।

Long ago, men could still get there, but the way through the gorges was terrible. A few families from Peru went that way to escape from a cruel ruler.

ये बसने वाले घाटी में बहुत अच्छे से रहे, लेकिन एक चीज़ ने उनकी ख़ुशी बिगाड़ दी। उन्हें एक अजीब बीमारी लग गई, और उनके सारे नए बच्चे अंधे पैदा हुए।

These settlers did very well in the valley, but one thing spoiled their happiness. A strange disease came to them, and all their new babies were blind.

इसलिए एक जवान आदमी मदद ढूँढने के लिए खड्ड से नीचे लौटा। रास्ता लंबा और ख़तरनाक था, और उसकी अपनी आँखें पहले से कमज़ोर थीं। नीचे की दुनिया में उसे एक पादरी मिला।

So one young man went back down the gorge to find help. The way was long and dangerous, and his own eyes were already weak. In the lower world he found a priest.

जवान आदमी दुबला था और धूप से साँवला हो गया था। उसने अपनी टोपी कसकर पकड़ रखी थी। वह नीचे की दुनिया की ज़िंदगी के बारे में कुछ नहीं जानता था।

The young man was thin and brown from the sun. His hands held his hat tightly. He knew nothing about life in the lower world.

“जब हम वहाँ ऊपर गए, तब मैं छोटा बच्चा था, फ़ादर,” उसने कहा। “उन्होंने मुझे एक बड़े थैले के पास लामा पर बाँध दिया। हमारी घाटी में वह सब कुछ है जो आदमी चाहता है। हमारे पास मीठा पानी, अच्छी घास और बढ़िया फल हैं। चीड़ के जंगल हिमस्खलन को रोकते हैं, और वहाँ कभी बारिश या बर्फ़ नहीं पड़ती।”

“I was a small child when we went up there, Father,” he said. “They tied me to a llama beside a big bag. Our valley has everything that a man can want. We have sweet water, rich grass and wonderful fruit. Pine forests hold back the avalanches, and it never rains or snows.”

“तो तुम यहाँ क्यों आए हो?” पादरी ने पूछा।

“Then why are you here?” the priest asked.

“क्योंकि हमें एक अजीब बीमारी लग गई, और हमारे नए बच्चे अंधे हैं। हम बिना पादरी के आए और हमने कोई गिरजाघर नहीं बनाया। मुझे लगता है कि यही कारण है।”

“Because a strange disease came to us, and our new babies are blind. We came without a priest, and we built no church. I think that is the reason.”

उन दिनों लोग नहीं जानते थे कि बीमारी कैसे फैलती है।

In those days, people knew nothing about how a disease travels.

“हमें एक गिरजाघर चाहिए,” जवान आदमी ने कहा। “वह सुंदर और सस्ता होना चाहिए, लेकिन सबसे ज़रूरी बात यह है कि वह सच में काम करे। हमें पवित्र चीज़ें और प्रार्थनाएँ भी चाहिए।”

“We need a church,” the young man said. “It must be beautiful and cheap, but above all it must really work. We need holy things and prayers too.”

उसने अपने थैले से चाँदी की एक छड़ निकाली। “मैं इससे दाम दे सकता हूँ,” उसने कहा।

He took a bar of silver out of his bag. “This can pay for it,” he said.

“और यह चाँदी कहाँ से आती है?” पादरी ने पूछा।

“And where does this silver come from?” the priest asked.

“हमारी घाटी में चाँदी नहीं है,” जवान आदमी ने जल्दी से कहा। “बिलकुल भी चाँदी नहीं, फ़ादर। हमने अपना सारा पैसा इकट्ठा किया, क्योंकि ऊपर हमें बहुत कम चीज़ें चाहिए।”

“There is no silver in our valley,” the young man said quickly. “No silver at all, Father. We put all our money together, because we need very little up there.”
