Lena tem sete anos. Ela tem uma gata. A gata se chama Mimi. Mimi é pequena e cinza, e tem patas brancas.
Lena is seven years old. She has a cat. The cat is called Mimi. Mimi is small and grey, and she has white paws.
Mas Mimi não está mais sozinha. Mimi tem quatro filhotes. Os filhotes agora têm oito semanas. Eles são pequenos, redondos e muito travessos.
But Mimi is not alone any more. Mimi has four babies. The babies are eight weeks old now. They are small, round and very cheeky.
Lena tem um nome para cada filhote. A gata branca se chama Neve. A gata preta se chama Noite. A gata cinza se chama Rato. E a gata cinza com as patas brancas se chama Mini. Mini é como a Mimi, só que menor.
Lena has a name for each baby. The white kitten is called Snow. The black kitten is called Night. The grey kitten is called Mouse. And the grey kitten with the white paws is called Mini. Mini is like Mimi, only smaller.
Toda manhã agora vêm cinco gatos no quarto de Lena. Eles pulam na cama. “Miau! Miau! Miau! Miau! Miau!” Aí a Lena se levanta. Rápido.
Every morning five cats come into Lena’s room now. They jump onto the bed. “Miaow! Miaow! Miaow! Miaow! Miaow!” Then Lena gets up. Quickly.
Os filhotes brincam o dia todo. Neve brinca com as meias do papai. Noite brinca com o jornal. Rato dorme no vaso de flores. E a Mini? Mini se esconde. Mini é muito boa em se esconder, como a Mimi.
The babies play all day. Snow plays with Dad’s socks. Night plays with the newspaper. Mouse sleeps in the flowerpot. And Mini? Mini hides. Mini is very good at hiding, like Mimi.
À noite o papai fica sentado no sofá. Ele tem um gato na cabeça, um gato na barriga e um gato no bolso. Ele olha para a Lena.
In the evening Dad sits on the sofa. He has a cat on his head, a cat on his tummy and a cat in his pocket. He looks at Lena.
“Lena, cinco gatos é demais. Os filhotes agora são grandes o bastante. Eles precisam de um novo lar.”
“Lena, five cats are too many. The babies are big enough now. They need a new home.”
Lena fica triste. Mas ela sabe: o papai tem razão. A casa é pequena demais para cinco gatos.
Lena is sad. But she knows Dad is right. The house is too small for five cats.
“Está bem”, ela diz baixinho. “Mas os filhotes só vão para amigos.”
“Okay,” she says quietly. “But the babies only go to friends.”
