その時計は祖母の物でした。古くて重い、銀の時計です。裏側には「E. W.」という二つの文字があります。祖母は亡くなる前に、それを私にくれました。

The watch belonged to my grandmother. It is old and heavy, made of silver. On the back there are two letters: “E. W.” Grandma gave it to me before her death.

私はヨナスです。二十八歳で、ライプツィヒに住んでいます。中央駅の近くのオフィスで働いています。生活はおだやかです。少しおだやかすぎるかもしれません。

My name is Jonas, I’m twenty-eight and I live in Leipzig. I work in an office near the main station. My life is quiet. Maybe a little too quiet.

祖母は当時、ただ一言言いました。「小さなボタンは一日に一度だけ押してね」。私は笑いました。祖母は疲れていて、混乱しているのだと思いました。

Back then Grandma said only one sentence: “Press the little button only once a day.” I laughed. I thought she was tired and confused.

一年間、時計は引き出しの中にありました。その後、私の別の時計が壊れました。それで、祖母の時計を使うことにしました。

For a year the watch lay in a drawer. Then my other watch broke. So I wore Grandma’s watch.

それはいつも正確でした。一秒も早くなく、一秒も遅くありません。横にある小さなボタンだけが、私には謎でした。

It always kept exact time. Not a second too early, not a second too late. Only the little button on the side was a mystery to me.
