O relógio pertenceu à minha avó. Ele é antigo e pesado, de prata. No verso tem duas letras: “E. W.”. A vovó me deu antes de morrer.

The watch belonged to my grandmother. It is old and heavy, made of silver. On the back there are two letters: “E. W.” Grandma gave it to me before her death.

Eu me chamo Jonas, tenho vinte e oito anos e moro em Leipzig.

My name is Jonas, I’m twenty-eight and I live in Leipzig. I work in an office near the main station. My life is quiet. Maybe a little too quiet.

Eu ri. Pensei que ela estava cansada e confusa.

Back then Grandma said only one sentence: “Press the little button only once a day.” I laughed. I thought she was tired and confused.

For a year the watch lay in a drawer. Then my other watch broke. So I wore Grandma’s watch.

Ele sempre funcionou exatamente no horário.

It always kept exact time. Not a second too early, not a second too late. Only the little button on the side was a mystery to me.
