The Odyssey

Retold in easy English (A2) from the novel by Homer

The whole of Homer's Odyssey, retold in easy English. The war at Troy is over, and every Greek hero is home, except one. Odysseus, the cleverest of them all, is lost somewhere at sea. On his long way home he meets the one-eyed Cyclops, the witch Circe, the singing Sirens and the ghosts of the dead. At home in Ithaca, more than a hundred proud men sit in his hall, eat his food and want to marry his wife, Penelope. His son Telemachus sets out to find him. After twenty years, Odysseus comes home at last, as a poor beggar that nobody knows.

The Gods Meet, and Athena Visits Ithaca

Tell me, Muse, about the man who travelled so far. He fought at Troy, and he helped to destroy that famous city. After the war, he saw many cities and learned how many different people lived. He suffered a lot on the sea. He tried to save his own life and bring his men home. But he could not save them. They were foolish, and they ate the cattle of the Sun god. So the god took away their way home. Tell me this story, Muse, daughter of Zeus. Start wherever you like.

Fang an, wo du willst.

The war at Troy was over for many years now. All the other Greeks were home again, or they were dead. Only one man was still far away: Odysseus, king of the island of Ithaca. He wanted to see his wife and his home again more than anything. But a goddess kept him on her island. Her name was Calypso. She lived in a big cave, and she wanted to marry him.

Reading it as a parallel text

A parallel text puts a story next to its translation, paragraph by paragraph. Read in the language you are working on and glance across only when a sentence stops you: the story keeps moving, and the words you look up stay in context. More in how to read with a parallel text.
