Er klopte iemand op de deur. Het was drie uur ’s nachts.
Somebody was knocking on the door. It was three o’clock in the morning.
Sam deed zijn ogen open en luisterde. Klop, klop, klop.
Sam opened his eyes and listened. Knock, knock, knock. Then a man’s voice: “I know you’re awake! I can hear you!”
Sam wasn’t awake. Well, now he was. He went to the door in his T-shirt and opened it.
It was Norbert from 2A, in blue pyjamas, with a very red face.
“Elke nacht,” zei Norbert.
“Every night,” said Norbert. “Every night this week, at exactly three o’clock, there’s a noise in your flat. Bang, bang, bang. For half an hour. My bedroom is two floors under your kitchen, and in this building you hear everything through the pipes. And I have to get up at six.”
“Het spijt me echt,” zei Sam. “Maar ik sliep. Ik denk dat iedereen hier sliep.”
“I’m really sorry,” said Sam. “But I was asleep. I think everybody here was asleep.”
“Wie maakt dat lawaai dan? Een spook?”
“Then who is making the noise? A ghost?”
Bonk. Bonk. Bonk.
At that moment, from the kitchen, they both heard it. Bang. Bang. Bang.
Norbert keek naar Sam. Sam keek naar de keukendeur. Niemand bewoog.
Norbert looked at Sam. Sam looked at the kitchen door. Nobody moved.
“Ga jij maar eerst,” zei Norbert. “Het is jouw flat.”
“You go first,” said Norbert. “It’s your flat.”
Sam deed de keukendeur heel langzaam open. De keuken was donker en leeg. En het geluid stopte.
Sam opened the kitchen door very slowly. The kitchen was dark and empty. And the noise stopped.
“Well,” said Norbert. “I’m going back to bed. But if your ghost wakes me up again, I’m calling the police. Or a priest. Whoever comes first.”
