Có ai đó đang gõ cửa. Lúc đó là ba giờ sáng.
Somebody was knocking on the door. It was three o’clock in the morning.
Sam opened his eyes and listened. Knock, knock, knock. Then a man’s voice: “I know you’re awake! I can hear you!”
Sam đâu có thức. À, giờ thì anh thức rồi. Anh mặc áo thun đi ra cửa và mở ra.
Sam wasn’t awake. Well, now he was. He went to the door in his T-shirt and opened it.
Đó là Norbert ở phòng 2A, mặc bộ đồ ngủ màu xanh lam, mặt đỏ bừng.
It was Norbert from 2A, in blue pyjamas, with a very red face.
“Every night,” said Norbert. “Every night this week, at exactly three o’clock, there’s a noise in your flat. Bang, bang, bang. For half an hour. My bedroom is two floors under your kitchen, and in this building you hear everything through the pipes. And I have to get up at six.”
“Cháu thực sự xin lỗi chú,” Sam nói. “Nhưng cháu đang ngủ mà. Cháu nghĩ mọi người ở đây đều đang ngủ.”
“I’m really sorry,” said Sam. “But I was asleep. I think everybody here was asleep.”
“Vậy ai làm ra tiếng động đó? Ma à?”
“Then who is making the noise? A ghost?”
At that moment, from the kitchen, they both heard it. Bang. Bang. Bang.
Norbert nhìn Sam. Sam nhìn cửa bếp. Không ai nhúc nhích.
Norbert looked at Sam. Sam looked at the kitchen door. Nobody moved.
“Cậu vào trước đi,” Norbert nói. “Căn hộ của cậu mà.”
“You go first,” said Norbert. “It’s your flat.”
Sam mở cửa bếp thật chậm. Nhà bếp tối om và trống không. Và tiếng động ngừng lại.
Sam opened the kitchen door very slowly. The kitchen was dark and empty. And the noise stopped.
“Well,” said Norbert. “I’m going back to bed. But if your ghost wakes me up again, I’m calling the police. Or a priest. Whoever comes first.”
