Too cold for Mama
कोफ़ी मेंसा तीस साल का था। वह घाना से आया था और एम्सटर्डम में रहता था। वह एक बड़े होटल के स्वागत कक्ष में काम करता था।
Kofi Mensah was thirty. He came from Ghana, and he lived in Amsterdam. He worked at the reception desk of a big hotel.
जनवरी में सोमवार की रात थी। होटल शांत था। बाहर तापमान शून्य से छह डिग्री नीचे था।
It was a Monday night in January. The hotel was quiet. Outside, it was minus six degrees.
ग्यारह बजे उसका फ़ोन बजा। अक्रा से उसकी माँ का फ़ोन था।
At eleven o’clock, his phone rang. It was his mother in Accra.
“कोफ़ी! मुझे टिकट मिल गया! मैं शनिवार सुबह दस बजे आ रही हूँ।”
“Kofi! I have my ticket! I arrive on Saturday at ten in the morning.”
“यह तो बहुत अच्छा है, माँ। मैं हवाई अड्डे पर मिलूँगा। फिर हम नहरों के किनारे घूमेंगे।”
“That’s great, Mama. I’ll be at the airport. Then we can walk by the canals.”
“क्या एम्सटर्डम में ठंड है?”
“Is it cold in Amsterdam?”
कोफ़ी ने खिड़की से बाहर देखा। सड़क पर खड़ी साइकिलों पर बर्फ़ थी।
Kofi looked out of the window. There was snow on the bikes in the street.
“थोड़ी सी,” उसने कहा।
“A little,” he said.
“अच्छा है। मैं अपनी सुंदर पोशाकें लाऊँगी। और तुम्हारे लिए थोड़ी मछली भी लाऊँगी। तुम अपनी तस्वीरों में बहुत पतले लग रहे हो।”
“Good. I’m going to bring my nice dresses. And some fish for you. You are too thin in your photos.”
बात करने के बाद, कोफ़ी सिर पकड़कर मेज़ पर बैठ गया। उसकी माँ के पास सर्दियों के कपड़े नहीं थे। अक्रा में उन्हें इनकी कभी ज़रूरत नहीं पड़ी।
After the call, Kofi sat at the desk with his head in his hands. His mother had no winter clothes. She never needed them in Accra.
“क्या बात है?” लोते ने पूछा। वह रात की पारी में रिसेप्शन पर उसके साथ काम करती थी।
“What’s wrong?” asked Lotte. She worked at reception with him on the night shift.
“मेरी माँ शनिवार को आ रही हैं। उन्हें लगता है कि यहाँ थोड़ी सी ठंड है।”
“My mother is coming on Saturday. She thinks it’s a little cold here.”
लोते हँसी। “थोड़ी सी! बाहर शून्य से छह डिग्री नीचे है। उन्हें सर्दियों के असली कोट की ज़रूरत है।”
Lotte laughed. “A little! It’s minus six. She needs a real winter coat.”
