Prea frig pentru mama
Too cold for Mama
Kofi Mensah avea treizeci de ani. A venit din Ghana și a locuit la Amsterdam. A lucrat la recepția unui hotel mare.
Kofi Mensah was thirty. He came from Ghana, and he lived in Amsterdam. He worked at the reception desk of a big hotel.
Era o noapte de luni din ianuarie. Hotelul era liniștit. Afară erau minus șase grade.
It was a Monday night in January. The hotel was quiet. Outside, it was minus six degrees.
La ora unsprezece, telefonul lui a sunat. Era mama lui din Accra.
At eleven o’clock, his phone rang. It was his mother in Accra.
„Kofi! Am biletul! Sosesc sâmbătă la zece dimineața.”
“Kofi! I have my ticket! I arrive on Saturday at ten in the morning.”
„E minunat, mama. O să fiu la aeroport. Apoi putem să ne plimbăm pe lângă canale.”
“That’s great, Mama. I’ll be at the airport. Then we can walk by the canals.”
„E frig la Amsterdam?”
“Is it cold in Amsterdam?”
Kofi s-a uitat pe fereastră. Era zăpadă pe bicicletele de pe stradă.
Kofi looked out of the window. There was snow on the bikes in the street.
„Puțin”, a spus el.
“A little,” he said.
„Bine. O să aduc rochiile mele frumoase. Și niște pește pentru tine. Ești prea slab în poze.”
“Good. I’m going to bring my nice dresses. And some fish for you. You are too thin in your photos.”
După apel, Kofi a stat la birou cu capul în mâini. Mama lui nu avea haine de iarnă. Nu a avut niciodată nevoie de ele la Accra.
After the call, Kofi sat at the desk with his head in his hands. His mother had no winter clothes. She never needed them in Accra.
„Ce s-a întâmplat?”, a întrebat Lotte. Ea lucra la recepție cu el în tura de noapte.
“What’s wrong?” asked Lotte. She worked at reception with him on the night shift.
„Mama mea vine sâmbătă. Ea crede că e puțin frig aici.”
“My mother is coming on Saturday. She thinks it’s a little cold here.”
Lotte a râs. „Puțin! Sunt minus șase grade. Are nevoie de o haină adevărată de iarnă.”
Lotte laughed. “A little! It’s minus six. She needs a real winter coat.”
