Mama İçin Çok Soğuk
Too cold for Mama
Kofi Mensah otuz yaşındaydı. Ganalıydı ve Amsterdam’da yaşıyordu. Büyük bir otelin resepsiyonunda çalışıyordu.
Kofi Mensah was thirty. He came from Ghana, and he lived in Amsterdam. He worked at the reception desk of a big hotel.
Ocak ayında bir pazartesi gecesiydi. Otel sessizdi. Dışarıda hava eksi altı dereceydi.
It was a Monday night in January. The hotel was quiet. Outside, it was minus six degrees.
Saat on birde telefonu çaldı. Arayan, Akra’daki annesiydi.
At eleven o’clock, his phone rang. It was his mother in Accra.
“Kofi! Biletimi aldım! Cumartesi sabah onda geliyorum.”
“Kofi! I have my ticket! I arrive on Saturday at ten in the morning.”
“Harika, Mama. Havalimanında olacağım. Sonra kanalların yanında yürüyebiliriz.”
“That’s great, Mama. I’ll be at the airport. Then we can walk by the canals.”
“Amsterdam’da hava soğuk mu?”
“Is it cold in Amsterdam?”
Kofi pencereden dışarı baktı. Sokaktaki bisikletlerin üzerinde kar vardı.
Kofi looked out of the window. There was snow on the bikes in the street.
“Biraz,” dedi.
“A little,” he said.
“Güzel. Güzel elbiselerimi getireceğim. Senin için de balık getireceğim. Fotoğraflarında çok zayıfsın.”
“Good. I’m going to bring my nice dresses. And some fish for you. You are too thin in your photos.”
Konuşmadan sonra Kofi masada başını ellerinin arasına aldı. Annesinin kışlık giysisi yoktu. Akra’da onlara hiç ihtiyacı olmadı.
After the call, Kofi sat at the desk with his head in his hands. His mother had no winter clothes. She never needed them in Accra.
“Neyin var?” diye sordu Lotte. Gece vardiyasında resepsiyonda onunla çalışıyordu.
“What’s wrong?” asked Lotte. She worked at reception with him on the night shift.
“Annem cumartesi günü geliyor. Buranın biraz soğuk olduğunu sanıyor.”
“My mother is coming on Saturday. She thinks it’s a little cold here.”
Lotte güldü. “Biraz mı! Hava eksi altı derece. Onun gerçek bir kışlık kabana ihtiyacı var.”
Lotte laughed. “A little! It’s minus six. She needs a real winter coat.”
