Frio demais para a Mama
Too cold for Mama
Kofi Mensah tinha trinta anos.
Kofi Mensah was thirty. He came from Ghana, and he lived in Amsterdam. He worked at the reception desk of a big hotel.
Era uma segunda-feira à noite em janeiro. O hotel estava calmo. Lá fora, fazia seis graus negativos.
It was a Monday night in January. The hotel was quiet. Outside, it was minus six degrees.
Às onze horas, o celular dele tocou. Era a mãe dele em Acra.
At eleven o’clock, his phone rang. It was his mother in Accra.
“Kofi! Eu comprei a minha passagem! Chego no sábado às dez da manhã.”
“Kofi! I have my ticket! I arrive on Saturday at ten in the morning.”
“Que ótimo, Mama. Eu vou estar no aeroporto. Depois a gente pode caminhar perto dos canais.”
“That’s great, Mama. I’ll be at the airport. Then we can walk by the canals.”
“Está frio em Amsterdã?”
“Is it cold in Amsterdam?”
Kofi olhou pela janela. Tinha neve nas bicicletas na rua.
Kofi looked out of the window. There was snow on the bikes in the street.
“Um pouco”, ele disse.
“A little,” he said.
“Que bom. Vou levar meus vestidos bonitos. E um pouco de peixe para você. Você está magro demais nas suas fotos.”
“Good. I’m going to bring my nice dresses. And some fish for you. You are too thin in your photos.”
After the call, Kofi sat at the desk with his head in his hands. His mother had no winter clothes. She never needed them in Accra.
“O que aconteceu?”, perguntou Lotte. Ela trabalhava na recepção com ele no turno da noite.
“What’s wrong?” asked Lotte. She worked at reception with him on the night shift.
“A minha mãe vem no sábado. Ela acha que faz só um pouco de frio aqui.”
“My mother is coming on Saturday. She thinks it’s a little cold here.”
Lotte riu. “Um pouco! Faz seis graus negativos. Ela precisa de um casaco de inverno de verdade.”
Lotte laughed. “A little! It’s minus six. She needs a real winter coat.”
