Beatriz worked at a dentist’s office in São Paulo. She answered the phone, made appointments and smiled at nervous people all day.
She was thirty-seven and divorced. Her husband left two years ago. He lived in Rio now, with a new wife.
Every evening, Beatriz went home, made dinner and watched TV with her cat.
On Friday, her friend Carla came to the office at lunchtime. They ate sandwiches in the park across the street.
„Was hast du letztes Wochenende gemacht?“, hat Carla gefragt.
“What did you do last weekend?” asked Carla.
„Ich habe die Wohnung geputzt. Ich habe eine Serie geschaut. Ich habe den Kater gewaschen.“
“I cleaned the flat. I watched a series. I washed the cat.”
„Du hast den Kater gewaschen?“
“You washed the cat?”
„Er mochte es nicht.“
“He didn’t like it.”
Carla hat ihr Sandwich hingelegt. „Bia, du solltest mehr ausgehen. Du bist siebenunddreißig, nicht achtzig.“
Carla put down her sandwich. “Bia, you should go out more. You’re thirty-seven, not eighty.”
„Ich gehe aus. Ich gehe jeden Tag zur Arbeit.“
“I go out. I go to work every day.”
„Das ist kein Ausgehen. Hör zu. In meiner Straße gibt es eine Tanzschule. Sie haben einen Forró-Kurs für Anfänger. Warum probierst du es nicht aus?“
“That’s not going out. Listen. There’s a dance school on my street. They have a forró class for beginners. Why don’t you try it?”
„Forró? Ich? Ich kann nicht tanzen. Ich habe zwei linke Füße.“
“Forró? Me? I can’t dance. I have two left feet.”
“Everybody has two left feet in a class for beginners. That’s why it’s a class for beginners.”
