Beatriz worked at a dentist’s office in São Paulo. She answered the phone, made appointments and smiled at nervous people all day.
She was thirty-seven and divorced. Her husband left two years ago. He lived in Rio now, with a new wife.
Every evening, Beatriz went home, made dinner and watched TV with her cat.
On Friday, her friend Carla came to the office at lunchtime. They ate sandwiches in the park across the street.
“What did you do last weekend?” asked Carla.
“Eu limpei o apartamento. Assisti a uma série. Dei banho no gato.”
“I cleaned the flat. I watched a series. I washed the cat.”
“Você deu banho no gato?”
“You washed the cat?”
“Ele não gostou.”
“He didn’t like it.”
Carla put down her sandwich. “Bia, you should go out more. You’re thirty-seven, not eighty.”
“Eu saio. Vou para o trabalho todos os dias.”
“I go out. I go to work every day.”
“Isso não é sair. Escuta.
“That’s not going out. Listen. There’s a dance school on my street. They have a forró class for beginners. Why don’t you try it?”
“Forró? Eu? Não sei dançar. Tenho dois pés esquerdos.”
“Forró? Me? I can’t dance. I have two left feet.”
“Everybody has two left feet in a class for beginners. That’s why it’s a class for beginners.”
