Kapitel 1: Das Auge im Berg

Chapter 1: The Eye in the Mountain

The light in the tunnel should not have been burning. Tunnel 7 had been sealed for eleven years. Leon Brunner braked so sharply that his bike nearly toppled over on the wet gravel and the back wheel skidded sideways with a squeal. Behind the rusty fence, where a dented sign reading «Tunnel 7 – No Entry» hung, a faint, yellowish glow was pulsing on the rock face just inside the entrance. It flickered, went out and glowed again, as if deep inside the mountain someone were slowly opening and closing an enormous eye.

Leon peered into the dusk for a long time without moving, his breath forming little white clouds. The Gonzen loomed pitch-black above Sargans, and the cool air smelt of wet leaves and of the iron that had been hacked out of the rock here for centuries. It was Friday, the first day of the autumn holidays, and he really ought to have been sitting at his grandfather's by now, eating fried potatoes and listening to old mining stories. But when he had knocked at his door earlier, nobody had come. Nobody. The front door had only been pushed to, the tea in the cup was ice-cold and the armchair by the window was empty. Leon stood motionless in the hallway, filled with dismay.
