Chapter 1: The Eye in the Mountain

Das Licht im Stollen hätte nicht brennen dürfen. Der Stollen 7 war seit elf Jahren verschlossen. Leon Brunner bremste so abrupt, dass sein Velo auf dem nassen Kies beinahe umkippte und das Hinterrad quietschend zur Seite rutschte. Hinter dem rostigen Zaun, dort, wo ein verbeultes Schild mit der Aufschrift «Stollen 7 – Betreten verboten» hing, pulsierte ein schwaches, gelbliches Leuchten auf der Felswand gleich hinter dem Eingang. Es flackerte, erlosch und glomm wieder auf, als ob tief im Berg jemand langsam ein riesiges Auge öffnete und wieder schloss.

The light in the tunnel should not have been burning. Tunnel 7 had been sealed for eleven years. Leon Brunner braked so sharply that his bike nearly toppled over on the wet gravel and the back wheel skidded sideways with a squeal. Behind the rusty fence, where a dented sign reading «Tunnel 7 – No Entry» hung, a faint, yellowish glow was pulsing on the rock face just inside the entrance. It flickered, went out and glowed again, as if deep inside the mountain someone were slowly opening and closing an enormous eye.

Leon spähte lange in die Dämmerung, ohne sich zu rühren, während sein Atem kleine weisse Wolken bildete. Der Gonzen ragte pechschwarz über Sargans auf, und die kühle Luft roch nach nassem Laub und nach dem Eisen, das man hier jahrhundertelang aus dem Fels geschlagen hatte. Es war Freitag, der erste Tag der Herbstferien, und eigentlich hätte er jetzt bei seinem Grossvater sitzen sollen, um Bratkartoffeln zu essen und alte Bergwerksgeschichten zu hören. Doch als er vorhin bei ihm geklopft hatte, war niemand gekommen. Niemand. Die Haustür war nur angelehnt gewesen, der Tee in der Tasse eiskalt und der Lehnstuhl am Fenster leer. Voller Bestürzung stand Leon reglos im Flur.

Leon peered into the dusk for a long time without moving, his breath forming little white clouds. The Gonzen loomed pitch-black above Sargans, and the cool air smelt of wet leaves and of the iron that had been hacked out of the rock here for centuries. It was Friday, the first day of the autumn holidays, and he really ought to have been sitting at his grandfather's by now, eating fried potatoes and listening to old mining stories. But when he had knocked at his door earlier, nobody had come. Nobody. The front door had only been pushed to, the tea in the cup was ice-cold and the armchair by the window was empty. Leon stood motionless in the hallway, filled with dismay.
