It is spring. The sun is shining. Lina and her little brother Noah are at the playground. The playground is in the park, next to a pond.

Lina est sur la balançoire. Noah est dans le sable. Il fait un château. Puis il crie : « Lina ! Viens vite ! Il y a un oiseau ! »

Lina is on the swing. Noah is in the sand. He is building a castle. Then he shouts, “Lina! Come quickly! There’s a bird!”

Lina vient.

Lina comes. A little bird is sitting in the sand. It is yellow and brown and very soft. It has a flat beak.

« Ce n’est pas un oiseau », dit Lina. « C’est un canard. Un bébé canard ! »

“That’s not just a bird,” says Lina. “It’s a duck. A baby duck!”

Le petit canard dit : « Piou ! Piou ! »

The little duck says, “Peep! Peep!”

« Où est la maman ? », demande Noah.

“Where is its mummy?” asks Noah. Lina looks to the left. She looks to the right. No mummy. Only children, mothers, fathers and a dog.

Le chien voit le canard. Il aboie. « Ouah ! Ouah ! » Le canard fait un bruit fort. Il court vers Noah. Il est maintenant sur sa chaussure.

The dog sees the duck. He barks. “Woof! Woof!” The duck peeps loudly. It runs to Noah and now it is sitting on his shoe.

« Il a peur », dit Lina. « On doit trouver la maman. »

“It’s scared,” says Lina. “We have to find its mummy.”

« La maman est sûrement à l’étang », dit Noah. « Les canards habitent à côté de l’étang. »

“Its mummy is sure to be at the pond,” says Noah. “Ducks live at the pond.”

Lina fait oui de la tête. « Bien. On va à l’étang. »

Lina nods. “Good. Let’s go to the pond.”
