The bus

मेहमत इस्तांबुल में रहता है। वह बावन साल का है। वह समुद्र के पास एक छोटे भोजनालय में रसोइया है।

Mehmet lives in Istanbul. He is fifty-two. He is a cook in a small restaurant near the sea.

मेहमत सब कुछ बना सकता है। वह सौ लोगों के लिए मछली, चावल और सूप बना सकता है। लेकिन वह गाड़ी नहीं चला सकता।

Mehmet can cook everything. He can make fish, rice and soup for a hundred people. But he can’t drive.

उसके परिवार में, उसकी पत्नी गाड़ी चलाती है। वह बाज़ार, डॉक्टर के पास और भोजनालय तक गाड़ी चलाती है। मेहमत उसके पास बैठता है और बात करता है।

In his family, his wife drives. She drives to the market, to the doctor and to the restaurant. Mehmet sits next to her and talks.

“यहाँ बाएँ मुड़ो,” वह कहता है। “नहीं, दाएँ! बस को देखो!”

“Turn left here,” he says. “No, right! Watch the bus!”

“मेहमत,” उसकी पत्नी कहती है। “यह गाड़ी कौन चलाता है? तुम या मैं?”

“Mehmet,” says his wife. “Who drives this car? You or me?”

“तुम, बिल्कुल।”

“You, of course.”

“तो चुप रहो।”

“Then be quiet.”

एक शाम, उसकी पत्नी एक चिट्ठी के साथ घर आती है। वह एक ही समय में खुश और उदास है।

One evening, his wife comes home with a letter. She is happy and sad at the same time.

“मेरे पास एक नया काम है,” वह कहती है। “एक अस्पताल में अच्छा काम है। लेकिन यह बर्सा में है।”

“I have a new job,” she says. “A good job, in a hospital. But it is in Bursa.”

“बर्सा! वह बहुत दूर है।”

“Bursa! That is far.”

“हाँ। मैं वहाँ सोमवार से शुक्रवार तक रहती हूँ। मैं शनिवार-रविवार को घर आती हूँ।”

“Yes. I live there from Monday to Friday. I come home at the weekend.”

मेहमत एक पल के लिए चुप रहता है। “और गाड़ी?”

Mehmet is quiet for a moment. “And the car?”

“गाड़ी मेरे साथ जाती है। मुझे बर्सा में इसकी ज़रूरत है।”

“The car comes with me. I need it in Bursa.”
