Otobüs
The bus
Mehmet İstanbul’da yaşıyor. O elli iki yaşında. Denize yakın küçük bir restoranda aşçı.
Mehmet lives in Istanbul. He is fifty-two. He is a cook in a small restaurant near the sea.
Mehmet her şeyi pişirebiliyor. Yüz kişi için balık, pilav ve çorba yapabiliyor. Ama araba süremiyor.
Mehmet can cook everything. He can make fish, rice and soup for a hundred people. But he can’t drive.
Ailesinde arabayı eşi sürüyor. Pazara, doktora ve restorana o sürüyor. Mehmet yanına oturuyor ve konuşuyor.
In his family, his wife drives. She drives to the market, to the doctor and to the restaurant. Mehmet sits next to her and talks.
“Buradan sola dön,” diyor. “Hayır, sağa! Otobüse dikkat et!”
“Turn left here,” he says. “No, right! Watch the bus!”
“Mehmet,” diyor eşi. “Bu arabayı kim sürüyor? Sen mi, ben mi?”
“Mehmet,” says his wife. “Who drives this car? You or me?”
“Sen tabii ki.”
“You, of course.”
“O zaman sessiz ol.”
“Then be quiet.”
Bir akşam, eşi eve bir mektupla geliyor. Aynı anda hem mutlu hem üzgün.
One evening, his wife comes home with a letter. She is happy and sad at the same time.
“Yeni bir işim var,” diyor. “İyi bir iş, bir hastanede. Ama Bursa’da.”
“I have a new job,” she says. “A good job, in a hospital. But it is in Bursa.”
“Bursa mı! Orası uzak.”
“Bursa! That is far.”
“Evet. Pazartesiden cumaya orada yaşıyorum. Hafta sonu eve geliyorum.”
“Yes. I live there from Monday to Friday. I come home at the weekend.”
Mehmet bir an sessiz kalıyor. “Peki ya araba?”
Mehmet is quiet for a moment. “And the car?”
“Araba benimle geliyor. Bursa’da ona ihtiyacım var.”
“The car comes with me. I need it in Bursa.”
