L’autobus
The bus
Mehmet vive a Istanbul. Ha cinquantadue anni. È un cuoco in un piccolo ristorante vicino al mare.
Mehmet lives in Istanbul. He is fifty-two. He is a cook in a small restaurant near the sea.
Mehmet sa cucinare tutto. Sa fare pesce, riso e zuppa per cento persone. Ma non sa guidare.
Mehmet can cook everything. He can make fish, rice and soup for a hundred people. But he can’t drive.
Nella sua famiglia, guida sua moglie. Guida fino al mercato, dal medico e al ristorante. Mehmet siede accanto a lei e parla.
In his family, his wife drives. She drives to the market, to the doctor and to the restaurant. Mehmet sits next to her and talks.
«Gira a sinistra qui», dice. «No, a destra! Attenta all’autobus!»
“Turn left here,” he says. “No, right! Watch the bus!”
«Mehmet», dice sua moglie. «Chi guida questa macchina? Tu o io?»
“Mehmet,” says his wife. “Who drives this car? You or me?”
«Tu, naturalmente.»
“You, of course.”
«Allora fai silenzio.»
“Then be quiet.”
Una sera, sua moglie torna a casa con una lettera. È felice e triste allo stesso tempo.
One evening, his wife comes home with a letter. She is happy and sad at the same time.
«Ho un nuovo lavoro», dice. «Un buon lavoro, in un ospedale. Ma è a Bursa.»
“I have a new job,” she says. “A good job, in a hospital. But it is in Bursa.”
«Bursa! È lontana.»
“Bursa! That is far.”
«Sì. Vivo lì dal lunedì al venerdì. Torno a casa nel fine settimana.»
“Yes. I live there from Monday to Friday. I come home at the weekend.”
Mehmet sta in silenzio per un momento. «E la macchina?»
Mehmet is quiet for a moment. “And the car?”
«La macchina viene con me. Mi serve a Bursa.»
“The car comes with me. I need it in Bursa.”
