The bus

Mehmet mieszka w Stambule. Ma pięćdziesiąt dwa lata. Jest kucharzem w małej restauracji blisko morza.

Mehmet lives in Istanbul. He is fifty-two. He is a cook in a small restaurant near the sea.

Mehmet potrafi ugotować wszystko. Może zrobić rybę, ryż i zupę dla stu osób. Ale nie potrafi prowadzić samochodu.

Mehmet can cook everything. He can make fish, rice and soup for a hundred people. But he can’t drive.

W jego rodzinie prowadzi żona. Jeździ na targ, do lekarza i do restauracji. Mehmet siedzi obok niej i mówi.

In his family, his wife drives. She drives to the market, to the doctor and to the restaurant. Mehmet sits next to her and talks.

„Skręć tu w lewo” – mówi. „Nie, w prawo! Uważaj na autobus!”

“Turn left here,” he says. “No, right! Watch the bus!”

„Mehmet” – mówi jego żona. „Kto prowadzi ten samochód? Ty czy ja?”

“Mehmet,” says his wife. “Who drives this car? You or me?”

„Ty, oczywiście”.

“You, of course.”

„To bądź cicho”.

“Then be quiet.”

Pewnego wieczoru jego żona wraca do domu z listem. Jest jednocześnie wesoła i smutna.

One evening, his wife comes home with a letter. She is happy and sad at the same time.

„Mam nową pracę” – mówi. „Dobrą pracę, w szpitalu. Ale jest w Bursie”.

“I have a new job,” she says. “A good job, in a hospital. But it is in Bursa.”

„Bursa! To daleko”.

“Bursa! That is far.”

„Tak. Mieszkam tam od poniedziałku do piątku. Wracam do domu na weekend”.

“Yes. I live there from Monday to Friday. I come home at the weekend.”

Mehmet milczy przez chwilę. „A samochód?”

Mehmet is quiet for a moment. “And the car?”

„Samochód jedzie ze mną. Potrzebuję go w Bursie”.

“The car comes with me. I need it in Bursa.”
