Die Kinder des Kapitän Grant

Retold in easy German (B2) from the novel by Jules Verne

In each language: Die Kinder des Kapitän Grant · Captain Grant’s Children

A message in a bottle drops out of a shark's belly: three half-eaten scraps of paper saying that Captain Grant is alive somewhere along the thirty-seventh parallel, once around the world. Lord Glenarvan sets sail with Grant's children Mary and Robert and an absent-minded geographer who is never wrong, or at least never says so. Over the Andes, through floods and bush, they chase a word they keep reading wrong. And a twelve-year-old boy must learn that calling for help is no weakness. Jules Verne's famous novel, retold for young readers.

Der Hai

The Shark

The shark was as long as a rowing boat, and it seemed to know it perfectly well. For an hour it had been following the Duncan , as if the whole sea belonged to it, along with the yacht sailing on it. Its grey dorsal fin drew a fine line through the water. Sometimes it vanished, sometimes it surfaced again close to the stern, and each time a murmur ran through the crew. On deck there was a mixture of fear and gloating, for everyone knew how a shark ends up when it gets too bold. The sailors' high spirits grew with every minute.

"That one wants nothing but trouble," grumbled the sailor Wilson, and spat over the rail. "A cheeky fellow like that belongs on the hook."

Reading it as a parallel text

A parallel text puts a story next to its translation, paragraph by paragraph. Read in the language you are working on and glance across only when a sentence stops you: the story keeps moving, and the words you look up stay in context. More in how to read with a parallel text.
