Der Alarm in der Krypta
The Alarm in the Crypt
No sooner had Nico Keller laid his hand on the glass display case than the alarm went off. A shrill tone tore through the crypt of the Grossmünster, bounced off the low vaults and went straight to the bones of the pupils of class 6b. Nico snatched his hand back as if he had touched a hot hob. The case in front of him was empty.
Only a minute earlier the seal had lain inside it, a round disc of dark bronze, no bigger than a five-franc coin. Dr Hotz, the guide, had complained at the start, with undisguised disapproval, that the lid of the case had been left unlocked since the morning "for maintenance" and the alarm switched off; it had only been switched back on shortly before the tour. Then she had explained to the class condescendingly that the lords of Zurich had used this seal more than seven hundred years ago to certify their charters. The disc showed three figures, Felix, Regula and their servant Exuperantius, the city's patron saints, and each of them carried their own head in their hands. Most of the children had found it disgusting, but Nico had found it magnificent.
