The First Sentence

At two o'clock in the morning there were three knocks on the dormitory door, and Yara Meier knew that nobody was to blame but herself. After all, she had invented the knocking herself, and she had described it at the campfire, blow by blow, and the whole class had listened. Now she lay rigid under her blanket, and the knocking came again.

It had all started four days earlier, on a Monday in September, at the station in Saignelégier.
