On a Tuesday market morning in Bern, twelve-year-old Mara is suddenly congratulated by strangers: everyone takes her for Lou, her exact double and the winner of the city's reading prize. To dodge a maths test, Mara plays along, and Lou gladly steps into her life, until a clock strikes too early, a big brother grows suspicious and three hundred chairs wait in the Kornhausforum.

Gratulation für eine Fremde

Congratulations for a Stranger

The first hug came from a woman with a basket full of leeks, and Mara Gerber had never seen her before in her life. "Congratulations, Lou!" the woman cried, squeezing her so hard that Mara gasped for breath. "We read about it in the paper. The whole street is proud of you!"

Mara opened her mouth in bafflement, but the chatty woman had already vanished between the market stalls. It was Tuesday, just after nine o'clock, and on the Bundesplatz people were crowding between crates of vegetables, flowers and wheels of cheese. Above it all loomed the Federal Palace with its green dome, as if it had to keep a strict eye on the market every Tuesday.

Reading it as a parallel text

A parallel text puts a story next to its translation, paragraph by paragraph. Read in the language you are working on and glance across only when a sentence stops you: the story keeps moving, and the words you look up stay in context. More in how to read with a parallel text.
