The number

प्योत्र वारसॉ में रहता है। वह पैंतालीस साल का है। वह शहर के एक बड़े दफ़्तर में काम करता है।

Piotr lives in Warsaw. He is forty-five. He works in a big office in the city.

हर सुबह, वह गाड़ी से काम पर जाता है। वह आठवीं मंज़िल के लिए लिफ़्ट लेता है। वह पूरे दिन अपनी मेज़ पर बैठता है।

Every morning, he drives to work. He takes the lift to the eighth floor. He sits at his desk all day.

शाम को, वह गाड़ी से घर जाता है। वह सोफ़े पर बैठता है और टीवी देखता है।

In the evening, he drives home. He sits on the sofa and watches TV.

आज, प्योत्र काम पर नहीं है। वह डॉक्टर के पास है।

Today, Piotr is not at work. He is at the doctor’s.

डॉक्टर छोटे बालों वाली एक युवा महिला है। वह बहुत देर तक अपने कंप्यूटर को देखती है।

The doctor is a young woman with short hair. She looks at her computer for a long time.

“श्री प्योत्र, आप कितना चलते हैं?” वह पूछती है।

“Mr Piotr, how much do you walk?” she asks.

“चलना? मैं अपनी गाड़ी से अपनी मेज़ तक चलता हूँ।”

“Walk? I walk from my car to my desk.”

“और सप्ताहांत पर?”

“And at the weekend?”

“सप्ताहांत पर, मैं अपने सोफ़े से अपनी रसोई तक चलता हूँ।”

“At the weekend, I walk from my sofa to my kitchen.”

डॉक्टर हँसती नहीं है। “श्री प्योत्र, आपका दिल खुश नहीं है। आपके दिल को ज़रूरत है कि आप चलें।”

The doctor does not laugh. “Your heart is not happy, Mr Piotr. Your heart needs you to walk.”

“कितना?”

“How much?”

“दस हज़ार कदम। हर दिन।”

“Ten thousand steps. Every day.”

प्योत्र उसे देखता है। “दस हज़ार? हर दिन? यह एक मज़ाक है।”

Piotr looks at her. “Ten thousand? Every day? That is a joke.”
