Nico has planned his class trip on an old paddle steamer down to the minute, until the ship's priceless clock vanishes, and with it the silver watch he borrowed without asking. Comment ça commence
Der perfekte Plan
The Perfect Plan
The glass display case in the saloon was empty, and Nico Keller knew at once that his plan was falling apart. Where the Gallia's old captain's clock had lain ten minutes earlier, there was only a dark red patch of velvet. And behind the case, in the narrow gap where he had hidden his own surprise, his fingers found nothing but dust.
Dabei hatte alles so gut begonnen.
And everything had started so well. Nico had worked on this day for three weeks, every evening after homework, until his eyes closed. When Mr Baumann, the teacher of class 6b, had asked who wanted to organise the school trip, Nico had been the only one to put his hand up. The others had rolled their eyes, but Nico had been fired up from the start. His conscientiousness was notorious throughout the class.

Reading it as a parallel text
A parallel text puts a story next to its translation, paragraph by paragraph. Read in the language you are working on and glance across only when a sentence stops you: the story keeps moving, and the words you look up stay in context. More in how to read with a parallel text.
