How it begins

EnglishGerman

JESS. I AM NO GOOD WITH WORDS SO I HAVE WRITTEN THEM DOWN. IF I TRY TO SAY THEM I WILL STOP HALFWAY AND MAKE A CUP OF TEA. YOU KNOW I WILL. SO READ THIS AND THEN I WILL ANSWER ANYTHING YOU ASK. THAT IS A PROMISE AND I HAVE NOT KEPT MANY.

JESS. ICH BIN NICHT GUT MIT WORTEN, ALSO HABE ICH SIE AUFGESCHRIEBEN. WENN ICH VERSUCHE, SIE ZU SAGEN, HÖRE ICH AUF HALBEM WEG AUF UND MACHE MIR EINE TASSE TEE. DU WEISST, DASS ICH DAS TUN WÜRDE. ALSO LIES DAS, UND DANN BEANTWORTE ICH DIR ALLES, WAS DU FRAGST. DAS IST EIN VERSPRECHEN, UND ICH HABE NICHT VIELE GEHALTEN.

That was how it began. Jess had read those first lines in the corridor with a kind of weary irritation, the way she read his shopping lists, hearing his voice in every capital letter. Grandad, writing a letter. Grandad, who signed birthday cards with a single W and thought a phone call longer than two minutes was showing off. She had nearly laughed.

AFTER YOUR GRANDMOTHER DIED I STARTED TO DRINK. NOT IN THE PUB. AT HOME AT NIGHT AT THE TABLE BEFORE THE BREAD. I KEPT THE BOTTLES BEHIND THE FLOUR. YOUR FATHER KNEW. I KNEW HE KNEW. WE NEVER SAID ONE WORD ABOUT IT. THAT IS HOW WE WERE.

NACHDEM DEINE GROSSMUTTER GESTORBEN WAR, HABE ICH ANGEFANGEN ZU TRINKEN. NICHT IM PUB. ZU HAUSE, NACHTS, AM TISCH, VOR DEM BROT. DIE FLASCHEN HABE ICH HINTER DEM MEHL VERSTECKT. DEIN VATER WUSSTE ES. ICH WUSSTE, DASS ER ES WUSSTE. WIR HABEN NIE EIN WORT DARÜBER VERLOREN. SO WAREN WIR.

Reading it as a parallel text

A parallel text puts a story next to its translation, paragraph by paragraph. Read in the language you are working on and glance across only when a sentence stops you: the story keeps moving, and the words you look up stay in context. More in how to read with a parallel text.
