Dornröschen

Charles Perrault

In each language: The Sleeping Beauty in the Wood · Dornröschen · La bella durmiente del bosque · La Belle au bois dormant · La bella addormentata nel bosco

At a princess's christening, an uninvited old fairy curses the baby to die by a spindle, a doom a younger fairy can only soften into a hundred years of sleep. Despite a kingdom-wide ban on spindles, the grown princess wanders into a tower room where an old woman sits alone, spinning.

There were formerly a King and a Queen, who were so sorry that they had no children, so sorry that it cannot be expressed. They went to all the waters in the world; vows, pilgrimages, all ways were tried and all to no purpose.

At last, however, the Queen proved with child, and was brought to bed of a daughter.

There was a very fine christening; and the Princess had for her godmothers all the Fairies they could find in the whole kingdom (they found seven), that every one of them might give her a gift, as was the custom of Fairies in those days, and that by this means the Princess might have all the perfections imaginable.

Reading it as a parallel text

A parallel text puts a story next to its translation, paragraph by paragraph. Read in the language you are working on and glance across only when a sentence stops you: the story keeps moving, and the words you look up stay in context. More in how to read with a parallel text.
