Die Affenpfote
W.W. Jacobs
In each language: The Monkey’s Paw · Die Affenpfote · La pata de mono · La Patte de singe · La zampa di scimmia
An old soldier shows a family a shriveled monkey's paw, a charm said to grant three wishes, and warns that those who meddle with fate do so to their sorrow. The father keeps it anyway and makes a modest wish, half in jest, just to see if the magic is real.

Father and son were at chess, the former, who possessed ideas about the game involving radical changes, putting his king into such sharp and unnecessary perils that it even provoked comment from the white-haired old lady knitting placidly by the fire.

Reading it as a parallel text
A parallel text puts a story next to its translation, paragraph by paragraph. Read in the language you are working on and glance across only when a sentence stops you: the story keeps moving, and the words you look up stay in context. More in how to read with a parallel text.
