Fauler Hans
Joseph Jacobs
In each language: Lazy Jack · Fauler Hans · Jack el Perezoso · Jack le Paresseux · Jack il Pigro
Jack is so lazy that his mother threatens to turn him out unless he works for his porridge. Each day he earns a different wage and carries it home the wrong way, losing or spoiling it, and each time his mother tells him how he should have carried it. “I’ll do so another time,” he always answers.

Once upon a time there was a boy whose name was Jack, and he lived with his mother on a common.
They were very poor, and the old woman got her living by spinning, but Jack was so lazy that he would do nothing but bask in the sun in the hot weather, and sit by the corner of the hearth in the winter-time. So they called him Lazy Jack.
His mother could not get him to do anything for her, and at last told him, one Monday, that if he did not begin to work for his porridge she would turn him out to get his living as he could.

Reading it as a parallel text
A parallel text puts a story next to its translation, paragraph by paragraph. Read in the language you are working on and glance across only when a sentence stops you: the story keeps moving, and the words you look up stay in context. More in how to read with a parallel text.
