Das Samtkaninchen
Margery Williams
In each language: The Velveteen Rabbit · Das Samtkaninchen · El conejo de terciopelo · Le Lapin de velours · Il coniglietto di velluto
A stuffed velveteen rabbit, given to a boy one Christmas, is soon forgotten in the nursery toy cupboard among the more fashionable, mechanical toys. An old, wise toy horse tells him that a toy can become Real, but only through being loved by a child for a very long time.

There was once a velveteen rabbit, and in the beginning he was really splendid. He was fat and bunchy, as a rabbit should be; his coat was spotted brown and white, he had real thread whiskers, and his ears were lined with pink sateen.
On Christmas morning, when he sat wedged in the top of the Boy's stocking, with a sprig of holly between his paws, the effect was charming.
There were other things in the stocking, nuts and oranges and a toy engine, and chocolate almonds and a clockwork mouse, but the Rabbit was quite the best of all.

Reading it as a parallel text
A parallel text puts a story next to its translation, paragraph by paragraph. Read in the language you are working on and glance across only when a sentence stops you: the story keeps moving, and the words you look up stay in context. More in how to read with a parallel text.
