Eine Studie in Scharlachrot

Arthur Conan Doyle

In each language: A Study in Scarlet · Eine Studie in Scharlachrot

The very first Sherlock Holmes story, the whole book retold in easy English. Dr Watson comes back from the war, weak and alone, and shares rooms in Baker Street with a strange young man. Soon a dead man lies in an empty house in London. There is blood on the floor but no wound, a woman's wedding ring, and one word on the wall in red: RACHE. The answer lies far away and long ago, in the deserts and mountains of America.

My group of soldiers was in India at that time. But before I could get there, a new war started. It was in Afghanistan, a country of high mountains north of India. When my ship arrived in Bombay, my soldiers were already deep in the mountains. So I followed them with some other officers. At last I found them in the city of Candahar.

Reading it as a parallel text

A parallel text puts a story next to its translation, paragraph by paragraph. Read in the language you are working on and glance across only when a sentence stops you: the story keeps moving, and the words you look up stay in context. More in how to read with a parallel text.
