Montresor has vowed revenge on his friend Fortunato for an insult, and means to punish him without ever being blamed. On an evening of carnival madness, he leads the wine-proud Fortunato down into the damp catacombs beneath his palazzo, to taste a cask of supposed Amontillado.

The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could; but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge. You, who so well know the nature of my soul, will not suppose, however, that I gave utterance to a threat.
