A one-legged tin soldier sees a paper dancer standing at the door of a paper castle and decides she is the wife for him. At midnight a little black goblin springs from a snuff-box and warns him not to wish for what isn't his. The soldier pretends not to hear.

There were once five-and-twenty tin soldiers, who were all brothers, for they had been made out of the same old tin spoon. They shouldered arms and looked straight before them, and wore a splendid uniform, red and blue.

Es waren einmal fünfundzwanzig Zinnsoldaten, die alle Brüder waren, denn sie waren aus demselben alten Zinnlöffel gemacht worden. Sie schulterten das Gewehr, blickten geradeaus und trugen eine prächtige Uniform, rot und blau.

The first thing in the world they ever heard were the words, "Tin soldiers!" uttered by a little boy, who clapped his hands with delight when the lid of the box, in which they lay, was taken off.
